Episode 32 – 🤒💉Houston, we have a problem!💉🤒

Something's Up?

Being a female girl dog, every 6 months or so I enter a phase known as “On Heat” which is where I become even more appealing than normal to male dogs. Usually I have a fairly easy time of this and am not very off-colour during throughout.

One such occasion I was bleeding quite a lot and after the time should have come to an end, I still kept bleeding. Mum and Dad were a little concerned but kept an eye on me just in case this would sort itself out. I did not feel poorly and was my usual bouncy self. We took a trip to Grans for tea as normal and during this time, I started to bleed more heavily, and this was changing to be very dark in colour. Dad was getting worried and took me home.

Mum called the vet and as this was getting late it was just an out of hours number. They called this for me and there is a pet hospital about a 20-minute drive from our house. This was the out of hours location they reached on the call. The vet they spoke to explained from the symptoms that I needed to go to their hospital as soon as possible. Dad immediately tucked me up in a blanket and drove me to the hospital.

Once there it was really quiet, we were the only people there. The receptionist booked us in, and we waited in the waiting room for the vet to come and see me. It was not long before they arrived and took me into an examination room for a check-up. Not much time later the vet returned me back to Dad and had a discussion with him. I did not know what was said at the time, but Dad looked quite concerned and upset.

The vet had explained that I had bladder stones and that I had become infected. At the stage I was in this had become life threatening and that they recommended an immediate Hysterectomy operation that night or else they were worried that I would not make it until morning. Dad had called Mum and talked this through with her. They both decided that despite the risks of the operation that this should go ahead. That was it, I said goodbye to Dad, and I was taken to the operating room and put under a general anaesthetic – off to sleep I went.

I woke up the next morning all groggy and in slight pain. I noticed that I had stitches all down my tummy and those hurt a little. The vet had called Mum and Dad with the news that the operation had been a success and that I was ready to come home. Dad came straight away for me and when he saw me gave me a huge, but gentle hug. This was fantastic, I was so pleased to see him.

Feeling a bit sorry for myself after the operation

He wrapped me up in even more blankets and gently lifted me into the car and took me back home trying to avoid bumps and potholes in the road as we went. As soon as we got home, I was greeted by Mum who was so pleased to see me. I was still a little tired off the operation but was happy to be home with my family.

They then set up a nice cozy bed for me in the living room where I stayed snuggled up into a blanked for the rest of the day. Over the net few days I got steadily better and stronger and the wounds healed really well, so much so that later on, there wasn’t even a scar!

Everyone was so relieved that I had returned to full health and the bonus was that I did not have to go through heat ever again. This did mean that I would not have puppies, but Mum and Dad were just pleased to have me back and didn’t care about that.

Back to my Normal Cheeky Self!

On a downside, due to the bladder stones, I was put on a more strict diet with less treats and freshly cooked Chicken – my favourite! Instead, I had to eat special dog food that Dad used to complain that it cost too much but it kept me healthy and I did like it. Fortunately, I was never really ill ever again and went on to have a fantastic life with my family – good times. Thankfully this was the end of that adventure.

Right off now to eat some more Chicken before I get caught!
