Episode 23 – ๐๐Food Glorious Food๐ง๐
As a Shih Tzu we have a very delicate palate. We should be fed a balanced diet of healthy dog food with a mixer supplement containing all the daily vitamins and minerals I need for a full and healthy life………..Rubbish! I’m not sure who came up with this, but it definitely was not a Shih Tzu! We are a refined breed and need the quality things in life. If it’s good enough for Mum and Dad, it’s good enough for me!
When I was a little puppy, just off my baby milk, I loved to eat mixed tripe. This is a mixture of all the bits of an animal that no-one else wants to eat, but as a pup I loved it. Mum and Dad had to travel often to the local pet store: dad called it “Pets are expensive” to get this particular type of food. As I became more comfortable with my new family, I noticed that they were not eating the same food as me – how strange!
It was not long before I realised that there was a whole new world of tasty delights out there (not necessarily intended for dogs) but scrummy all the same.
Some of my favourite main meals included fresh chicken (not the horrible, processed stuff, but the home cooked fresh kind), pork, bacon, curry (don’t ask!), pepperoni pizza, hot dogs (is that a bit wrong being a dog myself?) and scrambled egg. You may have noticed that dog food did not feature a lot in that list – well I am a Shih Tzu after all!
For a treat I loved to lick a bowl of fresh cream and once I put the huge eyes on at a coffee shop drive through and got my own Puppuccino which was a small cup of delicious cream. I got my nose stuck in this as I got to the bottom and dad had to help me out. In the summer I used to share an ice cream with Dad but it did get a bit messy, and I didn’t like to icy cold feeling on my nose.
At supper time, Mum used to treat herself with a chocolate bar. Dad used to laugh as I could be fast asleep next to him on the sofa and within seconds, without anyone noticing, I was alert, sitting next to Mum and putting on my best sad eyes in the hope for a piece of chocolate. When I stayed at Gran’s she used to get me white chocolate drops (not the dog treats but the real human kind – the expensive ones!) they were gorgeous! I later found out that she used to travel into town on the bus especially just to get me those – what a lucky dog I am (if not a little spoilt!)
At Christmas, Dad used to make Tiramisu which was a lush creamy desert. I loved it much to everyone’s surprise. As I got older, I had to take more care of my diet and ended up with a specialist dog food especially for my needs which I loved so I did follow the guidance sometimes, well occasionally anyway.
Right off to scoff some tasty morsel for my mid-morning snack!
