Episode 21 – π¨π¨On the Run!πΆπ
I spoke earlier about getting spooked out by the loud bangs
caused by fireworks. If I got scared, I used to find myself in unusual places
like the empty bath (no dog normally goes anywhere near the bath just in case
it’s their turn to go in!), the shower cubicle, on top of the piano, under the
bed etc.
On one occasion instead of wanting to hide, I could not control myself and I just wanted to run and run and run. Just as this happened our front door opened and that was it – I was off.
Mum and dad shouted and shouted form me, but I didn’t come back. I just continued to run and run to get away from the noise. They started to get worried for me as I had never run away so fast and so far. I was normally well behaved (well – mostly anyway!)
Mum stayed at the house just in case I came back, and dad set off to try and find me. He looked first at the places he thought I would go to regularly such as Nanna’s house and our normal walking route. No luck! Mum and dad were now getting a little worried about me as they thought I had run so far away that I had got lost and could have been knocked over by a car.
Dad then started to go around the village and take a route further and further out towards the next village. We sometimes walked this route taking H and Pips to their school. He shouted and shouted my name but nothing. He was getting very worried about me by then and in a bit of a panic, he started to run back to the house to get his car so that he could travel even further out to try and find me.
While he was running back, he heard a bark from the other side of the village in the nearby woods. This couldn’t be? Could it? He heard it again; he was sure that he recognised this bark as mine. For a small dog I had quite the bark that could cut through concrete at full volume!
I had made it back home all by myself as soon as the noise of the fire works had stopped. Fortunately, the woods I found myself in had been part of a route dad took me through in the summer and I could still remember how to get back. The woods were a bit scary in the dark which I why I was barking.
I’m not sure who was most pleased? My family to have me back or me to be back safe with the people I loved. Instead of getting told off I got a huge hug of relief off everyone. I realised how lucky I was to make it back home as so many things could have gone wrong.
After that day mum and day were very careful to take extra special care of me during the Autumn and at New Year when fire works were set off. Some years I would go to Gran’s house as it was a little quieter.
I learnt the hard way not to run off and after that night I stayed really close to my family and they kept me close to them. Thankfully everything was ok and within a few hours I was back to my normal mischievous self. I am a Shi Tzu after all!
Right, now to put my noise cancelling doggy headphones on and keep out of the way of the fireworks!
TTFN,
Mazie.
