Me getting a huge cuddle to protect me from the fireworks
As Autumn hits, the nights get darker and colder with
streets full of leaves (chasing these is one of my favourites past times!). One
tradition in the UK at the start of November is Guy Fawkes Night (sometimes
called bonfire night).
This is on the 5th of November and traditionally
people set bonfires and fireworks off to celebrate the foiling of a plot to
blow up the houses of parliament by a group of conspirators of which Guy Fawkes
was one. He was caught before this act could take place and his ending was
rather gruesome. As a way of reminding everyone of his attempted plot, effigies
of him are burn on bonfires each year and more recently fireworks are set off.
Today most people don’t connect this day with the plot to blow up the houses of
parliament but more of a late Autumn celebration.
How does this fit with me? Well, the issue is I hate loud
bangs. Where I say hate, I realllllly hate these. On the run up to bonfire night,
there are loads of fireworks set off around the houses which scare me and freak
me out.
I immediately find a hiding spot but if the noises continue,
I start to run around the house getting more and more hysterical. Fright takes
over and I find myself getting into the weirdest of spots. Dad once found me in
the shower, the bath and on another time on top of the Piano. To this day we
both don’t know how I got there!
Fireworks are coming - HIDE!
I would always get a huge cuddle of mum and dad which was
really nice, but I used to shake with fright until the noise stopped. Sometimes
I would go to gran’s house as this was a bit quieter but even there fireworks
were set off which scared me. Thankfully this was the only time of the year
that this happened, and I soon recovered. Mum and dad always looked after me
and got really concerned at how scared I was. I really appreciated how they tried
to keep me secure and how I always got huge cuddles.
As I got older, my hearing was not as good as it used to be
and so this did not scare me as much but if you want to celebrate Guy Fawkes
night with fireworks, please take a minute to think of me and all the other
dogs who will be just as scared as me.
Anyway, off to find a quiet spot to hide from the noise.
TTFN,
Mazie.
