Episode 17 – 🐹Jimmy T Hamster🐹

Jimmy T Hamster

One Saturday morning, Mum and Dad went shopping. They came back with a small cage and loads of bags of saw dust and fluffy bedding. What’s going on? I thought I’m too big to fit in that cage and hope that they don’t get any ideas of me moving out of their bedroom into the kitchen. My first ever night with my new family Mum wanted me to live in the kitchen at night and Dad had slept with me in a sleeping bag on the kitchen floor. Mum tried to settle me down at night in the kitchen, but I was not having any of it, I used to cry and whimper until she gave in and let me sleep on the floor in the main bedroom – result.

So, what was this all about? I found out shortly when Dad and RJ left home for a brief period and came back all excited. Wait…what’s that that Dad has in his hand? A small fury creature popped their head out and sniffed the air. This is Jimmy the Hamster it was announced, and he would be the family’s new pet.

I was intrigued as I had never met a hamster before. I was excited to give him a sniff and play with him on the floor, but Mum and Dad were very careful to let me see him but to keep me at a distance. I think that there were worried that I would treat Jim the same way I tossed and shook Longdog my favourite toy. They were probably right!

After a short while the new cage with its fresh saw dust was placed on the table next to the sofa. I jumped up to see what was going on. Jim was not the most energetic of hamsters and soon found his new house and went to bed closing the door behind him with a generous wodge of bedding.

Jim and I just Chillin'

Jim slept most of the day and only came out at night. I loved to jump onto the sofa next to him and give him a sniff through the bars and watch what he was up to. He had a great character and was so cute. Mum bought him an exercise ball and Dad used to get him out of the cage when he was awake and plop him into the ball. Off he would go running around the whole house at top speed. I guess that he liked this ball the freedom it gave him. Sometimes I would chase him around the house but soon got bored of that. He was a little tinker; he sometimes used to deliberately run the ball into me to try and wind me up the little furball!

Quite often he would go silent, and no one would see him for a while. Where’s Jim gone everyone would exclaim? Eventually he would be found having entered the bathroom and got into the shower area. Not a problem until his ball got stuck in the shower drain. This was just big enough to stop him being able to move his ball out of the shower and so he just had to sit there until someone found him. This became a regular thing and soon everyone knew where to find him if he went missing.

Then one day I jumped up onto the sofa to see Jim and the cage was gone? I had a sniff and look around for him, but he was no where to be seen. Mum told me that unfortunately Jim had lived a full life but as hamsters only lived for a short length of time he had quietly passed away from old age. I was sad, this was the first loss of an animal I had experienced. The whole family were also sad as Jim had a lovely personality and so full of fun.

My family did go on to have more hamsters, but I will always remember Jim 🐹 he was my first pet!

Anyway, off to chase some hamster balls around the house now.
