Episode 9 – ๐Ÿ’Bee’ careful!

Overlooking my kingdom from a log!

Summer is a great time of year. Dad used to take me out for fantastic walks. Despite living less than 15 minutes from the city centre, we are surrounded by farms and countryside. This gives us a great opportunity to explore.

One morning, dad had taken the day off work, and he was “baby sitting” me. That’s what I let him think anyway, I think it was more me babysitting him! It was a lovely sunny day and already was getting hot even though it was still early morning.

Dad got my leader and harness on. He didn’t like my collar as he said that he felt that it choked me, especially when I ran off away from him in excitement and the leader reached its full extent (it was one of those retractable leads that could extend out to 5 or 6 metres). This was my favourite harness, and we continued to use this all through my life. Dad still keeps it with him now to remind him of me.

Dad took me down the hill to a range of fields. It was later summer, and the fields were getting ready for harvest and were a nice fresh green as the crops were maturing. In one field there were what seemed to be thousands of poppies. Their deep red colour contrasted massively with the fields. It looked amazing.

"Poppies Galore"

I found a log near to the field and found it an excellent vantage point to see everything that was going on. It was great fun to be out through these fields and to spend some quality time with dad.

After a while, he took me further into the woods and I had great fun running in and out of the foliage and there were some fascinating smells and things to discover. On one area, there were some really nice yellow flowers. I decided to go and have a sniff. I just got there as a huge bumble bee rose up from one of the flowers and nearly hit me on the nose. Dad stepped straight in and moved me away from the area. He told me that it wouldn’t be nice if I had been stung on the end of my nose. Thanks for helping me dad, I think that I got lucky that day and remembered never to go near bees or wasps again.

On the way back dad took some great photos of me, obviously, and the fields. Even though that is nearly 15 years ago, he still uses them as screen shots on his phone. I really enjoyed days like that, just spending quality time with my dad and exploring new places. This was one of my favourite days ever and I know it was one of dad’s too. Every time he passes a field full of poppies, he remembers that day and the time we spent together – good times!

Time for a quick run around the fields to look at this year's poppies. I can’t wait until I can do this again with dad.....don’t worry, one day we will....
