Episode 10 – Gran

That's me looking cute - so I say so myself!

One Sunday evening dad took me into the car and off we went for a ride. I was not very old at this point and car journeys were still quite new for me. I wondered where we were going. After about a 15-minute drive we pulled up onto a driveway of a house. What’s going on I thought? Dad got me out of the car and let me walk about on the front lawn until I had been to the toilet. Then he lifted me up and took me inside. He walked along a short passageway and then turned right through a door which led to the living room.

“I have someone who wants to meet you” he said to the occupant of the room. I still couldn’t see who this was. He then lifted me up and I saw Gran for the first time. She was dad’s mum. I felt a little overawed by this as I was still really young and a little nervous to meet new people. I was let down on the floor and ran straight away under Gran’s legs. She was really nice to me and gave me a huge cuddle.

I immediately took to Gran she was the best. As mum and dad worked full time, I stayed with Nanna and Grandad a lot through the week. Dad suggested that to give them a break from me (I was a small fury ball of energy!) that once a week I should stay with Gran. She lived by herself and was a little lonely at times. Her previous dog, Sally had moved over the rainbow bridge a few years ago and although liking the company of a fury friend, Gran never wanted to replace Sally. So that was it, every Friday dad would take me over to Gran’s on the way to his work and drop me off. Later on, he would come for tea and pick me up and take me home. I loved staying with Gran; she spoiled me rotten – Great!

I remember once she was telling dad that I was off my food and that she was a little worried about me. He then asked her what exactly I had eaten that day. Gran explained that I have shared her toast and marmalade for breakfast, eaten a whole buttered slice of bread just for me, had a couple of shortbread biscuits mid-morning and a plate of fresh ham for brunch. But for some reason I wasn’t hungry for my dog food at lunch time? Gran couldn’t think why? Dad just shook his head!

Nothing like a quick nap after a good feed and walk!

Gran used to take me out for a long walk in the morning, and I met some other dogs out with their grandparents also. Gran made some new friends which made dad happy. In the afternoon I used to settle in my favourite spot for a quick nap which was on top of Gran’s armchair next to the window. It was just the right size for me to lay down on and after a few visits Gran had put a special blanket on top of the seat just for me. From this spot I could see what was going on an let the postman know just who was boss!

I loved Gran and she loved me. I visited her at least once every week for the rest of my life until one day it was Gran’s turn to leave this world. I miss her but look forward to getting all her great snacks when we meet again soon.

Anyway, time now for my mid-morning treats!
