Episode 3 – My Cousin Millie
My nana and granddad live just around the corner. Throughout my life I would stay with them when mum and dad were working. When I first visited them, I met their dog, Millie, for the first time: she was a black and white Spaniel cross. She was older than me by a long way. I loved the opportunity to play with her like I played with my brother at my first house. Unfortunately, she was a little too old to play young pup’s games and found me a little annoying. I did try and nip her tail to start a chase off but she just grumped and growled at me. My mum and dad loved Millie, and I respected that. She was a great dog and I got the fact that she was just too old to play.
She loved her food and once mum found her in her kitchen having stolen a box of dog biscuits and got her head stuck completely inside. After a massive struggle she just gave in and sat there completely still until help arrived. She may have been there for some time and no doubt filling in the time by consuming all the remaining biscuits. When my mum found her instead of rushing to the rescue she reached from her camera and took some pictures. It was hilarious to see and that just nicely summed up Millie's character.
Once my dad was taking Millie for a walk in the woods and she loved playing fetch the stone. He through a stone over a small hill which Millie sped at full speed towards. Unfortunately, this small hill actually had a huge drop on the other side that couldn’t be seen from where they were and dad said that Millie launched in slow motion over the edge and he thought that she was gone forever. Luckily, he did manage to catch her just in time and they both ended up in a heap on the floor. Dad was so glad that he didn’t have to go to grandad and nanna to tell them that he had killed their dog! I’ll tell you more about Millie and my dad’s other dog, Sally in later posts.
We used to go over to granddad and nanna’s house on a Sunday for lunch. Millie taught me how to steal food from everyone when not supposed to and she had the ability to put on the big sad eyes to get what she wanted.
I loved my granddad and nanna although they sometimes pretended to be hard and not like me, I knew they loved me and were soft at heart.
Nanna used to take me for a walk “with the girls” – her friends from the village and I met a Yorkshire Terrier called Chalky who was one of my friends. There are lots of good walks in the area and I loved exploring. I also loved that when nanna cooked a roast, I got a nice warm plateful for my dinner.
That’s all for now, time to play catch for a while and I’ll try not to jump off any cliff edges like Millie nearly did, I’ll speak to you next time. TTFN
